Abstract

Abstract

Pyromania is an impulse-control disorder characterized by repetitively starting fires; it is classified among Disruptive Disorders, Impulse Control and Conduct Disorders in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-5 . Although this disorder has been in the medical literature for a long time, it has received very few diagnoses due to the high number of accompanying diagnoses among fire setters. The fact that the disorder usually involves a crime is important in forensic cases. This article addresses information about the nature of the disorder and an evaluation of pyromania according to the Turkish Criminal Code and the Turkish Civil Code.
