Polymorphism of Erythrocyte Glyoxalase I and Salivary Glycoprotein in the Madras City Population

Abstract

The random population of Madras city has been screened for the polymorphism of erythroeyte glyoxalase i (GLO I), whole salivary glycoprotein and for the presence of ABO blood group substances. The phenotypes of GLO were determined by mixed starch/agarose gel electrophoresis. The gene frequencies in 236 unrelated individuals are 0.2381 for GLOl and 0.7619 for GL02. Rare phenotypes were not observed. Among a few inherent caste group s studied, «Adi Dravidas» showed a much lower gene frequency for GL0 1 than the other caste groups. The results are compared with those of other populations.
