Year 2023, Volume: 37 Issue: 3, 108 - 114, 18.12.2023

Abstract

Evaluation of Deaths Caused by Sharp Injuries

Year 2023, Volume: 37 Issue: 3, 108 - 114, 18.12.2023

Abstract

Objective: The frequent presence of sharp objects in daily life leads to their utilization in acts of assault, defense, and unfortunately, even with the intention of causing fatalities. This study was aimed to identify the data of cases where forensic autopsies were performed due to sharp force injuries in the province of Adiyaman. The other aims were to determine the existence of any relationships among these cases and to discuss the obtained results by comparing them with similar studies.

Methods: The reports prepared for the cases subjected to forensic autopsies between the years 2005 and 2018 in our clinic, along with the forensic investigation files obtained from the judicial authorities, were examined. The cases were evaluated in terms of variables such as the origin of the incident, the reason for the incident, the location of the incident, the number of wounds, and the injured organs.

Results: Of the cases, 62 (81.6%) were male, and 14 (18.4%) were female. 69 cases (90.8%) were identified as homicide-related. Among females, it was determined that 11 cases (78.6%) resulted in death at home. Domestic disputes accounted for 13 cases (17.1%) and it was the most common cause of incidents. The most frequently injured organs were the lungs and heart. In 19 cases (25.0%), only one wound was observed. The distribution of wound number across genders was similar (p > 0,05).

Conclusion: Sharp force injuries continue to pose a significant risk to public health. When evaluating sharp force traumas, a detailed assessment of the incident scene is essential, followed by a careful postmortem examination. Factors such as the shape of the wounds, the number and location of injuries, wound trajectory, injuries to soft tissues and the skeleton, and the cause of death should always be thoroughly evaluated.
