Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy for the Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in plantar fasciitis.
Materials and Methods: This study included 42 female and 14 male patients who were admitted to our hospital between 01.09.2018-30.12.2018 and diagnosed as chronic plantar fasciitis. The demographic findings of the patients were recorded. Five sessions of ESWT were performed at three-day intervals. The symptom levels of the patients were determined using the Visual Analogue Scale (0-10); Pain, activity and disability levels were questioned using Foot Functional Index (FAI). Evaluations were repeated before and after treatment.
Results: Symptom level of the patients included in the study; There was a statistically significant improvement in pain, activity and disability scores after treatment (all p <0.05). In addition, there was a significant correlation between body mass index and pretreatment activity score (r = -0.299, p <0.05), but no correlation with pain and disability score (r = -0,121, p = 0> 0.05), ( r = 0.03, p> 0.05).
Conclusion: ESWT is symptomatic and functionally effective in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. ESWT, which is a non-invasive treatment method, can be used in patients who do not benefit from conservative treatment for plantar fasciitis.

Plantar Fasiit Tedavisinde Ekstrakorporeal Şok Dalga Tedavisinin Etkinliğinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract


Amaç: Kronik plantar fasiit tedavisinde ekstrakorporeal şok dalga tedavisinin (ESWT) etkinliğinin belirlemektir.

Araçlar ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmaya hastanemize 01.09.2018-30.12.2018 tarihleri arasında 6 aydan uzun süreli ayak tabanı ağrısı yakınması ile başvuran, kronik plantar fasiit tanısı alan, 18 yaş üstü 42 kadın ve 14 erkek hasta dahil edildi. Hastaların demografik bulguları kaydedildi. Hastalara üç gün ara ile beş seans ESWT uygulandı. Hastaların semptom düzeyleri Vizüel Analog Skala (0-10) ile; ağrı, aktivite ve yetersizlik düzeyleri ise Ayak Fonksiyonel İndeksi kullanılarak sorgulandı. Değerlendirmeler tedavi öncesi ve tedavi sonrası yapıldı.

Bulgular: Hastaların semptom düzeyi; ağrı, aktivite ve yetersizlik skorlarında tedavi sonrasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olarak düzelme saptandı (tüm p<0,05). Ayrıca beden kitle indeksi ile tedavi öncesi aktivite skoru arasında anlamlı korelasyon tespit edilirken (r=-0,299; p<0,05), ağrı ve yetersizlik skoru ile korelasyon saptanmadı (r=-0,121; p=0>0,05),(r= 0,03; p>0,05).

Sonuç: Plantar fasiit tedavisinde ESWT semptomatik ve fonksiyonel olarak etkilidir. Non invazif bir tedavi yöntemi olan ESWT, plantar fasiit tedavisinde konservatif tedaviden fayda görmeyen hastalarda kullanılabilir.
