Surviving Life After Cancer and Nursing Care: A Literature Review

Abstract

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, recent advances in screening programs, early diagnosis, and the development of novel treatment modalities have contributed to a notable increase in cancer survival rates. As survival rates improve, attention has shifted toward the long-term health and well-being of cancer survivors. The end of active treatment does not signify the complete resolution of the disease experience; survivors often face a range of persistent physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and economic challenges. Many of these issues, including the late effects of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and targeted therapies, may arise months or even years after treatment and can significantly impair quality of life. This evolving landscape necessitates a comprehensive approach to survivorship care, with a focus on promoting health-enhancing behaviors. Evidence indicates that regular physical activity and the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices play a critical role in reducing the risk of cancer recurrence and improving overall survival outcomes. Conversely, factors such as obesity and physical inactivity are associated with increased recurrence rates and reduced life expectancy. Therefore, supporting survivors in developing sustainable health behaviors is essential for optimizing long-term outcomes and ensuring a better quality of life post-treatment.

Kanserden Sonra Hayatta Kalma ve Hemşirelik Bakımı: Bir Literatür İncelemesi

Abstract

Kanser, dünya genelinde halen en önemli morbidite ve mortalite nedenlerinden biri olmaya devam etmektedir. Ancak tarama programları, erken tanı yöntemleri ve yeni tedavi modalitelerindeki gelişmeler, kanser sağkalım oranlarında belirgin bir artışa katkı sağlamıştır. Sağkalım sürelerinin uzamasıyla birlikte, kanser tedavisi sonrasındaki uzun vadeli sağlık sorunları ve yaşam kalitesine ilişkin konular daha fazla önem kazanmaya başlamıştır. Aktif tedavinin sona ermesi, hastalık deneyiminin tamamen ortadan kalktığı anlamına gelmemektedir; kanserden sağ kalan bireyler, fiziksel, psikolojik, sosyal, ruhsal ve ekonomik açıdan çeşitli kalıcı sorunlarla karşı karşıya kalabilmektedir. Kemoterapi, radyoterapi, cerrahi ve hedefe yönelik tedavilerin geç dönem etkileri, tedavi sonlandıktan aylar hatta yıllar sonra ortaya çıkabilir ve yaşam kalitesini önemli ölçüde olumsuz etkileyebilir. Bu değişen tablo, sağkalım sürecinde bireylere yönelik bütüncül bir bakım yaklaşımını gerekli kılmaktadır. Araştırmalar, düzenli fiziksel aktivite ve sağlıklı yaşam alışkanlıklarının benimsenmesinin, kanserin tekrarlama riskini azaltmada ve genel sağkalımı artırmada önemli bir rol oynadığını ortaya koymaktadır. Buna karşılık, obezite ve fiziksel inaktivite gibi risk faktörleri, hastalığın tekrar etme olasılığını artırmakta ve yaşam süresini olumsuz yönde etkilemektedir. Bu nedenle, kanserden sağ kalan bireylerin sürdürülebilir sağlık davranışları geliştirmesi, uzun vadeli sonuçların iyileştirilmesi ve tedavi sonrası yaşam kalitesinin artırılması açısından kritik bir öneme sahiptir.
