Investigation of Body Image, Self-Esteem and Quality of Life in Women with Pelvic Organ Prolapse: The Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of pelvic organ prolapse on body image, self-esteem and quality of life. Material and Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in the Urogynecology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in the Aegean Region between January and September 2023. The population of the study consisted of all women who applied to the urogynecology outpatient clinic (n=275) and the sample consisted of 200 women. Individual Diagnostic Form, Prolapse Quality of Life (QoL) Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Body Image Scale were used in the study. Data analysis was performed with SPSS 25.0 program. Results: It was determined that the highest score in the quality of life sub-dimensions was General Health Perception (75.07±13.75) and the lowest score was Personal Relationships (48.58±17.08). The mean score of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was 14.70±4.42 and the mean score of Body Image Scale was 125.63±29.39. According to the results of Pearson correlation test to determine the relationship between Prolapse Quality of Life Scale and Rosenberg Self-Esteem and Body Image Scale, there is a high level, negative linear relationship between Prolapse Quality of Life Scale and Rosenberg Self-Esteem, and a high level, negative linear relationship between Prolapse Quality of Life Scale and Body Image Scale. Conclusions: It was found that women with prolapse had low quality of life, low self-esteem, negative body perception, and their quality of life decreased as their body perception and self-esteem were negatively affected

The study was conducted with written permission obtained from the Ege University Medical Research Ethics Committee (Decision No: 23-1T/21, Date: 13.01.2023) and the institution where the research was conducted (No. E.1013492, Date: 30.11.2022). The study’s aims were conveyed to the women com¬prising the research sample through the informed consent form, and their written consent was ac¬quired. Permission was obtained via email from the researchers who established the Turkish validity and reliability of the scales used in this study. The re¬search adhered to the principles outlined in the Hel¬sinki Declaration.
