Sinemada Performatizm ve Performatist Karakterler: Postmodernizm Sonrası Duygulanımın ve Anlamın Yeniden İnşası Üzerine Bir İnceleme
Abstract

Performatism in Cinema And Performatist Characters: A Study on The Reconstruction of Affect And Meaning in Post-Postmodernism
Abstract
This article examines the concept of “performatism,” developed by the German cultural theorist Raoul Eshelman, within the context of cinematic art. Emerging as a reaction against the aesthetic tendencies of postmodernism—which are closely interwoven with irony, fragmentation, the absence of meaning, and value relativism—performatism is interpreted as a paradigm claiming that art can once again generate affect, sincerity, commitment, miracles, and transcendent meaning. Utilizing a qualitative and hermeneutic analysis based on Eshelman’s performatist framework, this study discusses five purposively selected sample films: Forrest Gump, Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt), The Idiots, American Beauty, and Amélie. Each film is analyzed through the categories of ‘double framing,’ ‘hero typology,’ ‘monist narrative,’ ‘mechanisms of persuasion on the recipient,’ and ‘theistic narrative logic.’ The findings reveal that performatist cinema is not merely a thematic preference but a paradigm that consistently offers a cohesive form-content architecture. Rather than embodying the ironic distance and fragmentation that mark the postmodern subject, the performatist character undertakes a monolithic determination, a naive yet transformative capacity for love, and a mission to reinvest the surrounding world with meaning. In conclusion, at a cultural juncture where postmodern irony has reached its limits, performatist films function to reconstruct ‘transcendence.’
