Analysis of changes in the water surface area of Lake Mogan using Landsat satellite images (1987-2023)
Abstract
Background and aims Lake Mogan is a significant protected dam lake located within the Gölbaşı Special Environmental Protection Area, as identified and declared by Council of Ministers Decision No. 90/1117. The lake is an important recreational and wetland area for Ankara, the capital of Turkey. However, it is negatively affected by factors related to climate change and uncontrolled construction around the lake. This study aims to reveal changes in Lake Mogan’s water surface area over the 36-year period from 1987 to 2023 by integrating Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. Spatial change was calculated using supervised classification methods by applying band combinations of 5, 6 and 4, and 4, 5 and 3, respectively, to Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-8 OLI satellite images. The study revealed that the lake area increased by 5.9% between 1987 and 2023. Methods In this study, spatial change analysis of Lake Mogan was performed using controlled classification methods by applying the (4, 5, 3) and (5, 6, 4) band combinations to Landsat-5 TM (1987) and Landsat-8 OLI (2023) satellite images, respectively. Results Supervised classification results revealed that the spatial change difference between 1987 and 2023 was 35,818.7 ha, corresponding to a spatial increase of 5.9%. Conclusions In this study, the effective analysis of lake area change was performed using a supervised classification method based on remote sensing techniques. The study clearly demonstrates the long-term effects of management activities developed for the application area and various climatic variables on the lake area. In this context, strategic monitoring of water resources is critical to controlling anthropogenic activities and minimizing the potential effects of climate change.
