Investigation of the sound absorption performance of wood-based sandwich panels reinforced with basalt fiber fabric, glass fiber fabric, and jute fabric

Abstract

Background and aims This study aims to investigate the role of reinforcement type in determining the sound absorption performance of wood-based sandwich panels (WBPS) reinforced with basalt fiber fabric, glass fiber fabric, and jute fabric, using a single-component polyurethane adhesive (PUR-D4). Methods As wood-based panels, 4 mm thick beech plywood and 9 mm thick oriented strand board (OSB-2 class) were used, and a single-component polyurethane adhesive (PUR-D4) was used as adhesive. Basalt fiber fabric, glass fiber fabric, and jute fabric were used as reinforcement layers between the wood-based panels. Test samples of wood-based sandwich panels reinforced with basalt fiber fabric, glass fiber fabric, and jute fabric, and unreinforced wood-based sandwich panels, were tested at four different locations. Results According to the test results, the highest air-dry density (δ₁₂) value was obtained as 740 kg/m³ in WBSP reinforced with glass fiber fabric, while the lowest δ₁₂ value was determined as 687 kg/m³ in unreinforced samples. The highest sound absorption coefficient (SAC) was measured as α = 0.22 in WBSP reinforced with jute fabric, while the lowest SAC value was determined as α = 0.16 in the glass fiber reinforced sample. Similarly, in terms of frequency, the highest SAC value was 1000 Hz (α = 0.35), while the lowest SAC values were measured at 2000 Hz, 2200 Hz, and 2400 Hz (α = 0.12). Conclusion The results suggest that reinforced wood-based sandwich panels offer an effective combination of sound absorption efficiency and material sustainability, making them promising candidates for eco-friendly acoustic panel applications in building and interior environments.
