Abstract
Tramadol, which shows chemical similarity with morphine, is an analgesic drug acting central nervous system. The analgesic potency of tramadol, a synthetic codein analog, is lower than morphine because of its weak µ-opioid receptor affinity. Although it is a frequently preferred drug in the treatment of acute and chronic pain, its abuse has been increasing recently. Tramadol also has a relaxing effect and is less addictive than other opioids. It is also commonly used in pregnant women. In this review, general information about the pharmacological properties, side effects and embryoteratogenicity of tramadol is given.
