THE MITHRIDATIC WARS IN THE FASTI TRIUMPHALES AND POMPEY’S TRIUMPH EX ASIA

Abstract

The mention of Asia in the third triumph of Pompey the Great, celebrated upon his return from the East in 61 BCE, should be understood as a reference to the continent, consistent with the ecumenical significance of this campaign. Moreover, the Mithridatic Wars would have been understood by the Roman Republic as a conquest of the East, reviving the achievements of Alexander the Great.
