İONİA VE KARİA ÖRNEĞİNDE HELLENİSTİK DÖNEM SAVUNMA MİMARİSİNİN POLİORKETİKA BAĞLAMINDA YAPISAL ANALİZİ
Abstract

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF HELLENISTIC DEFENSIVE ARCHITECTURE IN THE CONTEXT OF POLIORCETICS: THE CASE OF IONIA AND CARIA
Abstract
Siege warfare has been one of the determining factors in shaping the settlement patterns and defensive concepts of ancient cities. The development of offensive methods and siege practices necessitated the enclosure of settlements with fortification systems, leading to a continuous interaction between defensive architecture and the art of poliorcetics. Therefore, poliorcetics should be considered not only within the framework of offensive operations and siege devices but also in relation to the defensive structures developed against such threats. With the Hellenistic Period, siege warfare acquired a more systematic and engineering-based character, resulting in the reorganization of urban defense systems. Architectural elements such as city walls, towers, gates, ditches, and defensive lines became significant structural responses developed against changing siege conditions. Defensive systems were shaped not only by military requirements but also by topographical features, settlement characteristics, and regional conditions. This study examines Hellenistic defensive architecture within the context of poliorcetics by analyzing the structural characteristics and developmental processes of fortification systems in the regions of Ionia and Caria. Urban defensive structures are comparatively evaluated in terms of planning principles, architectural arrangements, and the functional use of defensive elements. In this way, the study aims to demonstrate how transformations in siege practices were reflected in defensive architecture and how fortification systems were adapted in response to these developments. Based on these evaluations, the interaction between siege warfare and defensive architecture emerges as one of the fundamental dynamics shaping the physical organization of Hellenistic cities. Drawing upon ancient sources and archaeological evidence, this study aims to reveal the structural transformation of defensive architecture in response to developments in poliorcetics through an assessment of the fortification systems of Ionia and Caria
