Abstract

THE ROLE OF DIGITALIZATION IN TRANSFORMATION OF ACADEMIC WORK

Abstract

For the last ten years, we have been witnessing the digital transformation in higher education institutions, and this process closely affects academics. This study aims to reveal the effects of digitalization on academic work. Qualitative research design was used in the study. The data were obtained from semi-structured in-depth interviews with twenty-one academics. This data set was analyzed descriptively and themes were created. After the data analysis phase, 4 themes emerged: spatial flexibility, access to resources and ease of cooperation, change in communication style and speed, and work-life balance. According to the findings, digitalization increases spatial flexibility, facilitates access to resources and academic collaboration. Increasing digitalization in higher education institutions transforms the traditional way of communication and increases the speed and density of communication. The increase in the speed and intensity of communication leads to the problem of being constantly accessible. Finally, it was concluded that spatial flexibility and being accessible at any time have negative effects on work-life balance.
