Abstract
The two areas most neglected in the writing of Mormon history are the modern and the non-American experience of the Church; this essay enters both of these realms in tracing the efforts to establish a colony for Mormon converts in the Near East. Rao Lindsay, Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, gained personal interest in his subject as one of the last L. D. S. missionaries in Palestine: he returned to do a thesis at Brigham Young University on missionary activities in the Near East, and his doctoral dissertation at the University of Michigan, “Nıneteenth Century Amerıcan Schools In The Levant — A Study Of Purposes, was published in 1965.

Mormon tarihi yazımında en çok ihmal edilen iki alan Mormon Kilisesi'nin modern ve Amerikan dışı deneyimleridir; bu makale Yakın Doğu'da Mormon dinine geçenler için bir koloni kurma çabalarının izini sürerken bu iki alana da girmektedir. Maryland Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi'nde Yardımcı Doçent olan Rao Lindsay, Filistin'deki son İsa Mesih’in Son Zaman Azizleri Latter Day Saints - L.D.S. misyonerlerinden biri olarak konusuna kişisel bir ilgi duydu: Brigham Young Üniversitesi'nde Yakın Doğu'daki misyonerlik faaliyetleri üzerine bir tez yapmak için geri döndü ve Michigan Üniversitesi'ndeki doktora tezi “Bir Araştırma Konusu: On Dokuzuncu Yüzyılda Levant'taki Amerikan Okulları - Nineteenth Century American Schools in the Levant - A Study Of Purposes”, 1965 yılında yayınlandı.
