Type I Error and Power of Tests When Applying The Student's-t, Welch and Trimmed-t Tests to Two Samples of Various Sizes from Normal Populations Having Various Variance Ratios

Abstract

In this study, Type I Error and Power of Tests were examined in two samples of various sizes from normal populations with various variance ratios when the Student's-t, Welch and Trimmed-t Tests with 5 percent trimming were applied. For this aim, the 10000 simulation experiments were run for each combinations of differences of the populations which differ from each other by 8,=0.0,1.0,1.5,2.0 standard deviation. Each of these experiments was taken with samples of equal and unequal sample sizes and applied different tests. At the end of these procedures, Type I error rates and power of the tests was observed empirically. The 10000-simulation tests show that when the population variances are homogenous all of the tests when they are heterogeneous Welch and Trimmed-t Test would be used confidentially. On the other hand, when the sample sizes were increased, Welch and Trimmed-t Tests were not influenced from the heterogeneity of populations variance.

Abstract

Bu çal ışmada, değişik varyans oranl ı populasyonlardan al ı nan iki örnek ortalamas ı aras ı ndaki fark ı n Student-t, Welch ve %5 ay ı klama uygulanmış Ay ı klanm ış-t Testleri ile kar şı laşt ı r ı lması sonucu elde edilen I. Tip hata olası l ı kları ve testin gücü ele al ı nm ışt ı r. Bu amaçla, populasyon ortalamalar ı arası ndaki farklar Si=0.0,1.0,1.5,2.0 standart sapma olacak şekilde 10000 simülasyon denemesi yap ı lm ışt ı r. Her bir simülasyon denemesinde söz konusu populasyonlardan, örnek genişlikleri eşit ve farkl ı olan örnekler al ı nm ış ve bu örneklere söz konusu testler uygulanarak gerçekleşen I. Tip hata olas ı l ı kları ve testlerin gücü ampirik olarak elde edilmi ştir. Sonuçta, örnek geni şliklerine bağl ı olarak populasyon varyanslar ı homojen oldu ğ unda her üç test, populasyon varyanslar ı heterojen olduğ unda ise Welch ve Ay ı klanm ış-t Testlerinin daha güvenilir olduğ u görülmüştür. Ayr ı ca örnek genişlikleri artt ı kça söz konusu testlerden özellikle Welch ve Ay ı klanmış-t Testlerinin populasyon varyanslar ı n ı n heterojenliğinden fazla etkilenmedi ği de gözlenmiştir.
