Justice is one of the important virtues of humanity since ages. Justice is also one of the four basic virtues in moral philosophy. Justice is a value that has been discussed in many disciplines, from philosophy of law to political philosophy. The search and debate for justice continues in today's society and people, starting with questions and problems such as what justice is, what is fair or unfair. Examining the idea of justice in his struggle in the personality of Alija Izetbegović constitutes the main framework of this study. Justice is an indispensable virtue for Izetbegović, who played a key role in the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina with his statesmanship, political and intellectual struggle. Although there are many studies on Izetbegović, the scarcity of works especially on the understanding of justice has led us to the idea of preparing this article. What was the outlook of his understanding of humanity and justice under the conditions of so many wars, prisons and genocide? What is the general thought of justice? How does he see the West and the East in terms of justice? How does he evaluate religions' view of justice? Throughout the article, the questions in the form of Izetbegović were mentioned specifically and the main framework of his understanding of justice was tried to be drawn. As a result, justice is a valuable virtue that must be fought for in Izetbegović. He has fought this struggle with his country in most stages of his life, especially with reference to religion. For him, justice is not the name of the perfect, but the normal. His views on justice are rich, which should be evaluated in the coming years.
Justice is one of the fundamental virtues that people have wanted to live as a more just, equal and social being. In different aspects, justice is an ideal value for which wars, peace treaties are made and the geographical borders of countries change. For this reason, every work on justice is important because it touches people. The main reason why we want to examine Alija Izetbegović's understanding of justice is that despite many studies on Izetbegović, the issue of justice has not been evaluated independently. Our study consists of five chapters including introduction and conclusion. In the first part, the source of the virtue of justice in Izetbegović was discussed in detail. The second part is on the Dayton treaty, on his idea of justice in war and political processes. In the third part, the value of the idea of justice and equality in his view of religions is discussed. In the conclusion part, which constitutes the last section, the importance Izetbegović attaches to the virtue of justice is summarized, and the points that need to be removed and taken as an example are stated.
For Izetbegović, seeking justice is as precious and sacred as looking for water in the desert. Injustice is as dangerous as leaving a person without feeling and water. In this context, it can be said that nothing can be obtained without effort for justice and freedom, and even if it is obtained, it cannot be made permanent. He does not seek complete perfection in justice, as in many other matters. He desires the realization of the normal, as in the third way theory. The understanding of justice is based on this normal. He is on the side of the good, the just. He is against all kinds of injustice. In his view of religions, he states that Islam is a synthesis religion and that justice is established on both sides. However, it also implies that he will not be good on a person's religion alone. He even emphasizes that he would prefer a good Christian to a bad Muslim. Regardless of the circumstances, war or peace emphasizes that people should be treated with justice. In this direction, it also assumes the example of the need to sign peace treaties with bad conditions and unfair conditions just to prevent the death of more people.
The virtue of justice is a value that is involved in the human conscience, has been handled from different angles in every age and has never left the agenda of humanity. At the same time, justice is a source of other virtues such as honesty, courage and compassion, and even collects it within itself. In this respect, Izetbegović fought by knowing the value of this virtue and emphasized the value of justice in both his works and speeches. This study we have done has shown the source, importance and application of the virtue of justice for him. He has made us identify that justice is a state of equilibrium, that it is a normal thing. We hope that bringing to your attention a bit of his struggle for justice will justify the mistakes that the work might contain, and justice will ultimately remain.
