Peter Benedict: Türkiye etnografi tarihinden bir portre

Year 2022, Issue: 44, 4 - 19, 31.12.2022

Abstract

Abstract

Peter Benedict (1938–2006) is an underrecognized figure in the history of anthropology in Turkey even though his Ula research, published in 1974, has been one of the most meticulous studies on the Anatolian countryside. This article unveils a biographical portrait of Benedict by utilizing the archival resources that consist of personal correspondences from the 1960s and 70s as well as oral history interviews conducted by the author. In addition, by analyzing his publications, it demonstrates Benedict’s authentic contributions to the literature and emphasizes the originality of his approach to the post-World War II transformations through the point of view of the townsmen. Designed in life history format, thanks to the help of details about his personal life, this article aims to present Benedict as a human being with his successes and anxieties.
