The work that is the subject of this evaluation is written by a Japanese anthropologist, Prof. Dr. Noriko Nakayama, a faculty member at the Department of International Relations, Chubu University, located in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Her book is based on the field study conducted by herself in Zonguldak-Ereğli between June 1992 and June 1993. Although this article is written as an evaluation of the book written by Noriko Nakayama, it also tries to discuss the methodological advantages of carrying out a fieldwork in a foreign environment, the unique potential of anthropological insight to reveal the realities of a society through field research by participant observation and the futility of adapting foreign concepts to local contexts which always ends up distorting the realities of the society under scrutiny.
