The treatment of femoral fractures in children with 90-90 sling traction
Abstract
The 219 femoral fractures of 207 children aged between 0-14 have been reviewed between 1977 and 1987. The treatment of children aged 4-8 by using 90-90 sling traction were first used by the present authors staring from 1984. The 61 patients out of 103 in this group were studied in detail. The treatment of femoral fractures in 30 patients by 90-90 skeletal traction, and in 31 patients by 90-90 sling traction were followed up for at least 6 months. The results of both treatments were not significantly different and equally succesfull. Therefore the treatment of 90-90 sling traction in 4-8 age grup children could be considered as an acceplable method, because it is easier to conduct and needs much less equipment, but in this treatment considering the possibility of formation of peroneal nerve lesion, the fibular head region and popliteal region should be carrefully protected by cotton wool or sponge not more than 5 kg weights sohould be hanged and it should not be applied to overweight children and children older than 8 years of age.
