Gas gangren

Abstract

Gas gangren is still a major problem despite nowaday s modern medical and surgical management. Although it is encountered in trauma patients, it may occur in elective surgen cases. In this article, 26 cases of gas gangren were eveluated retrospectively. Their age were between 5-56 years (mean 30.5 years). Causative factors were open fractures in 20 cases (%77), criminal abortion in two (%7.7), diabettes mellitus in two (%7.7), perianal abcess in one (%3.8) and blood sampling from the finger in one (%3.8). The patients were managed with combined surgical and medical treatment. Surgical procedures were amputation in 23 (%88.5) cases, fasciotomy and debridement in 3 (%11.5) cases and additional histerectomy two (%7.7) cases. Fourteen patients (%53.8) survived.
