Abstract
In the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Ege University. Medical Faculty, from August 1978 to 1988, between the ages of 30 and 98, insidence of fractures ofthe Colles, proximal ends of femur and humerus and vertebrae due to osteoporosis and mild trauma or falls were reviewed retrograde. Meterial and method: 1011 fractures in 1002 patients were analysed statistically as to regard do age, sex and fracturc sites. Of 1002 patients, 548 ,(54,7%) were females and 454 ( 45.3% ) males. Mean age was sixy (from 30 98). Colles fractures were 337 (33.3%), intenrochanteric fractures 210 (20.8), femoral neck fractures 146 (14.5%). subtrochanteric fractures 23 (2.3%) of the total fractures. Vertebral fractures were (17.1%) and proximal end fractures of humerus were 121 (12%) of all fractures.
Results: Upper end fractures of femur were the most frequent fractures being 379 (37.6%) of all fractures. Vertebral fractures were seen most frequently between the age of 40 and 50, Upper end fractures of humerus between 60-70, Colles fractures between 50-60 years of age, femoral neck, İntertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures beween 60-70 years of age. Due to the advanced age, osteoporosis the most frequently results in the fractures between the age of 60- 70. The early and necessary management should be established to prevent the fractures in old age carring vital risk.
