9 year follow-up of congenital dislocation of the hip treated with Lorenz cast

Abstract

27 patients (39 hip joints) with congenital dislocation of the hip treated conservatively by Lorenz casting technique İn 1980 and 1981 Orthopaedics and Ttaumatology Department, İstanbul University lstanbul Medical Faculty, were reexamined by clinical. radiological and sintigraphic methods after 8-9 years from their treatment, to evaluate vascularisation, development of a joint, and anteversion of the hips. ln our series avascular necrosis (AVN) was diagnosed in 27. 7 percent of the patients by) X-ray, and 3 percent of the patients by bone sintipgraphy. In this study the percent of AVN’s diagnosed by X–ray is lower than most of the series in the literature the reason for this maybe due to the long follow-up priod in our series and revascularisation of the femoral head in most of patients derotaion-varisation osteotomy was indicated due to the changes in their final X-rays AVN of the femoral head was found to have no impact on the development of the acetabulum.
