Delayed and non-union in fractures of the neck of the femur in children

Abstract

Twelve cases of delayed and non-union in factures of the neck of the femur in children were evaluated. Mean age of these cases was 11.4 with 8 girlsand four boys. The problem of union developed after treatment by bone setters in six cases, after conservative treatment in four, and after surgical treatment in two cases. Seven cases accepted surgical treatment. The surgical procedures were subtrochanteric osteotomy with bone grafting in three, internal fixation with Knowles pins and bone grafting in two cases. Two cases whose fixation were made by Knowles pins failed to unite. One of these cases lost follow up. The unİon has been obtained İn the other case later by subtrochanteric osteotomy. We have concluded that, subtrochanteric osteotomy with bone grafting is treatment of choice in these cases.
