Pauwels Y osteotomy in the treatment of pseudoarthrosis of the femoral neck

Abstract

We have revİewed ten cases of femoral neck pseudoarthroses treated with Pauwels Y osteotomy at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of İstanbul University, İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, between 1979 and 1987. Union was achieved in all cases. Four of the hips had varying degrees of avascular necrosis before and after the operation. Avascular necrosis developed postoperatively in two of remaining six hips. Clinical results were excellent in one, very good in three, good in five and poor in one hip. We concluded that, Pauwels Y osteotomy could offer good results when the primary problem is non-union.
