Total hip replacement in patients with ankylosing spondilitis with involvement of the hip

Abstract

Between 1971 and 1988, twenty total hip arthroplasties in thirteen patients with ankylosing spondilitis were evaluated at one to seventeen years (average 65 months). Clinical results were %25 excellent, %20 good, %25 fair, %30 poor. Significant improvement was noted as regards pain, mobility, and ability to walk. %75 of the patients had no difficulties with routine activites. Although only 4 patients could continue their original jobs, most of them were able to work actively. There were three failed arthroplasties due to infection, trauma and femoral stem fracture. The incidence of radiolucent lines around the acetabular and femoral components were %65 and %18, respectively. The only grade IV lucency was in femoral zone l. Myositis ossificans developed in %47.4 of the cases but none of them affected the clinical results. It is concluded that %85 of the patients with ankylosing spondilitis are satisfied after total hip replacement.
