The effects of various bone replacement materials on bone regeneration in rats

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of autogeneous and allogeneous grafts to the effects of BMP (Bone morphogenetic protein) and hydroxyapatite (pyrost), which induce osteogenesis on bone regeneration. 40 rats have been divided into five groups, each having 8 and under equivalent conditions the mentioned materials have been applied to standard calvaria defects. 4 weeks Iater osteogenesis in the defect areas has been histologically evaluated. It has been noticed that autogeneous graft was the most effective material allogeneous grafts did not have a direct integration and BMP was more efficacious than hydroxyapatite in osteogenesis induction. However it was agreed that further advanced studies are needed for applications on human beings.
