Fractures of the intercondylar eminence of the tibia

Abstract

The cases of nine fractures of the intercondylar eminence of the tibia were reviewed at a mean of 4. 6 years, (range, 2 to 9 years) after treatment. There were five acute and four chronic cases. Their ages were 7-49 years, mean 29.3 years. There were three type II, and six type III fractures. Adult fractures were frequently associated with other osseous or sott tissue lesions. The cases were treated either conservatively or sorgically. There were 1 excellent, 2 good, 4 fair, and 2 poor results according to the Lysholm scoring scale. 6 cases showed varying degrees of pivot shift phenomena. Preinjury Tegner activity levels of mean 5.4 (range, 2-9) were mean 3.8 (2-7) at the last follow up. 4 patients had to decrease their activity levels by 2-7 points. Radiographic examination revealed nonunion in 4 cases. Despite favorable treatment and radiographic union, the prognosis of the fractures of the intercondylar eminence may not be always good.
