Replacement of meniscus with a periosteal greft

Abstract

In this study, free autogenous periosteal grefts were used for the replacement of the rabbit menisci removed by medial meniscectomy. The knee joints and the newly formed tissues were examined motphologically and histologically at the end of the 3rd month. In all cases, the morphological examination revealed that the transplanted periosteal grafts developed into meniscus like new tissues but there were osteophyte formation and cartilage destruction in articular surfaces of the knee bones. Histological examination of the newly formed tissues showed endochondral bone formation and hyaline cartilage were the predominant tissue in 8 (88.9%) of the 9 rabbits. Meniscus like fibrous-cartilage was seen in only one rabbit. According to the results of this study, newly formed tissue obtained by periosteal grafting is insufficent to replace meniscus functions and to prevent degenerative changes after meniscectomy in rabbits.
