Surgical treatment in metatarsus varus
Abstract
We reviewed 25 feet of 17 patients with primary or residual (in clubfoot) metatarsus varus treated surgically at Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department of Medical Faculty of Istanbul between 1975 and 1988. All of our patients had conservative treatment beforehand and those with residual metatarsus varus (except 3 cases) had surgical treatment to correct the deformities other than metatarsus varus. According to clinical and radiographical evaluations the results were 44% excellent or good, 36 % moderately good, and 20 % poor. We performed tarsometatarsal and intermetatarsal release in 19 feet, excision of abductor hallucis in 4, and metatarsal osteotomy in 2 feet. The results in primary metatarsus varus are relatively more successful but in patients with metatarsus varus as a residual deformity in clubfoot surgicaltreatment is difficult and the deformity tends to recur. Therefore these patients should be carefully evaluated when surgery is considered.
