Operative treatment of ankle fractures

Abstract

Between the years 1985-1989 in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of Gülhane Military Medical Academy and Medical Faculty Training Hospital in Haydarpaşa 49 cases with ankle fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The mean follow-up period is 18 months. The results were evaluated according to objective and subjective criterial. In general estimation 71.4% good, 24.5% fair and 4.1% poor results compared with the post operative radiographs. With the exact restoration of the anatomy of the ankla mor1is. the biomechanical prerequisites for a good function will be optimal. The best method of treatment for attaining this goal would seem to be accurate open reduction and rigid internal fixation.
