The relation between septic arthritis and joint aspiration in the presence of bacteremia

Abstract

This study was undertaken on 50 rabbits to determine the relation between bacteremia, septic arthritis and the efficiency of prophylactic antibiotic therapy following a traumatic aspiration in the presence of bacteremia. The risk of joint sepsis. following traumatic joint aspiration was investigated in bacteriemic rabbits it was found that in bacteremic animals there was an increased risk of development of joint sepsis after a traumatic aspiration it is recommended that, in clinical practise even under prophylactic antibiotic therapy joint aspira tions should be with minimal blood contamination and under atraumatic conditions .
