A different surgical concept for the treatment of paraxial fibular hemimelia

Abstract

In the congenital fibular deficiency which is an important reason of the lower limb discrepancy, the severity of deformity, the age and the difference between the lengths are affecting the treatment of choice. The treatment of choice in cases of excessive lenght inequality is amputation by using the heel skin flap and then prostheses. In this paper we reported the outcome of the surgical treatment in order to obtain an acceptable shortness and walking status for a 13 years old case of congenital right fibular deficiency who has 19 cm of shortening. Our surgical procedure was lengthening the limb by fusing the nonfunctional foot longitudinally and later epiphyseallengthening of tibia.
