A case of short humerus lengthered 13 centimeters, case report

Abstract

Increased risks usually keep orthopaedists away from high grade extremity lengthening operation protocols. This case report is about a girl who had 13 cm shortness of left humerus as a sequel of upper humerus epiphyseal fracture. We adapted Orthofix monolateral axial external fixator to the patient and used De Bastiani technique (callotasis) for lengthening procedure. Lengthening was performed 3 times daily at a speed of 1,25 mm per day. Percentage of lengthening was 37,6 percent. Total recovery period was 204 days and recovery index was 15,69 days per centimeter. Compared to recovery index of othersbones this recovery index 15 very low. No complications occured in the Case and at the end both function and cosmetic appearance of the extremity Was excellent. This reported case is the greatest amount of lengthening obtained among the one levellengthening for both upper and lower extremity, and totallengthening for upper extremity.
