Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and results

Abstract

127 arthroscopic partial meniscestomies were performed at our clinic between 1988 and 1992 years. 66 patients were followed whose ages ranged between 17-35 (mean 25.8) Mean follow-up was 21.8 months (747). Patients were classified in two groups isolated meniscal lesions (IML) and combined lesions (CL). All the patients were evaluated with Lysholm scoring scale. Tegner activity degree and radiologically by Fairbank's criteria. 2 rearthroscopic partial meniscectomy were performed the IML (n. 41) Mean Lysholm score was 92.3. Fairbank s criteria were positive in 12.2% Tegner level was decreased 9.7%. At the CL group (n. 25) 23 patients were found to have ACL and PCL lesions Mean Lysholm score was 85.3 Fairbank's criteria were positive in 28% and Tegner level was decreased 36%. In a series of reports, arthrosis was reported in about 50% after longterm follow-up of arthroscopic meniscectomies whereas only 25% was seen in arthroscopic repair. Arthroscopic meniscectomy is superior to open meniscectomy and meniscal repair is better than both of them. If it is possible to repair the meniscus, it is the choice of treatment
