Open reduction and internal fixation in treatment of pilon tibial fractures

Abstract

Pilon fractures are the most serious fractures among the ankle fractures and generally occur after high energy trauma. The main goalfor the treatment of these fractures is to obtain a good functioned ankle joint as in all intraarticular fractures by achieving anatomicalreduction and fulljoint restoration. We evaluated 26 .cases with 28 pilon fractures hospitalized and treated at our Orthopaedie and Traumatology Clinic at Ministery of Health Kartal Training and Research Hospitalunder the light of fiterature between March 1989- March 1993. lt was concluded that Open Reduction-lnt8rnal Fixation is one of the best treatment.
