External fixators and results applied in open tibial fractures

External fixators and results applied in open tibial fractures

Abstract

Although many different metods are recommended in the management of open tibial fractures, extemal fixators have gained popularity as a prefe"ed method in the stabilization of such fractures. The external fixator (E. F.) we have applied is unilateral biplanar and more economic compared to others. We have given our approach to open tibial fractures and the use of E. F. We have applied E. F. to 75 patients suffering from open tibial fractures between the years 1989 to 1993 in Taksim Hospital of the Ministry of Health. Union has been succeeded in fractures of a1f patients and Chronic osteomyelitis has been witnsssed in ons patient. Pin-track infection was seen in 3 patients. No malunion or shortening was seen in any of the patients. We have compared our results with the literature and with the results of other alternative methods applied in similiar fractures in our clinic previously. As a results, positive results have been achieved with the proper application of the technique of this type of E. F. and problems that we have faced during other methods of treatment have diminished significantly.
