Gamma nailing for subtrochanteric fractures of the femur
Abstract
Subtrochanteric fractures especially comminuted ones have posed a challenge to orthopaedic surgeons. From February 1990 to September 1993, in Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Clinic of Ege University, 9 (3 female, 6 male) cases with subtrochanteric femur fractures were treated with a Gamma nail. The incidence of the types of fractures, 3 (33%} 2A, 2 (22%} 2B, 4 (44%) 3A, based on the Seinsheimer's classification. The average age was 36 (min. 20, max. 58). The average follow up of cases were 1 0 (min. 5, max. 34} months. AII of the fractures healed and there was a good range of hip movements, there was one (11%) malunion. Using the Postel-Merle d'Aubigne criteria, 4 (44%) excellent, 4 (44%) good and 1 (11%} fair results were found. AII patients who were ambulatory before their fracture were able to bear weight. The Gamma nail allowed immediate weight-bearing and provided a safe fracture healing in a good position.
