Tibial fractures and intramedullary nailing with Ender pins

Abstract

Between 1987-1991 at SSK Istanbul Hospital, 27 patient with tibial fractures were treated by closed intramedullary nailing with Ender pins. The patient population included, 22 male (%81) and 5 female (%19) patients with mean age of 34 years. There were 13 closed and 14 open fractures between 10 cm below the knee ioint and 7.5 cm above the ankle. Clinical improvement was obtained in 14 weeks. We did not observe any delayed and nonunion, infection and shortness Ionger than 1 0 mm with angulation more than 1 0°. The overafl results of the cases were %44 (12) pertect %37 (10) good and % 18 (5) moderate. We suggest that in tibial closed fractures and grade 1 and 11 open fractures, application of Ender pins for intramedullary fixation is cheap, easy and safe.
