Prognosis of the untreated meniscal lesion

Abstract

Twenty-nine patients who had symptoms suggestive of lesions of the meniscus of the knee were given a date for arthroscopy. Patients who had more than two episodes of locking or had unrelieved swelling were not included in the study. Three-six months after the first examination, we reviewed and reexamined all of them. None of the 29 patients had worse symptoms: 6 had no change in symtoms, 7 had no symptoms (but all of them no longer participated in Sports) and the remaining 16 had partial relief of symptoms (but 12 of the 16 no longer participated in sports or had reduced their activity). Three patients remained unable to work. Only 6 of the 29 who had engaged in sports before they had symptoms resumed their normal sports activity. Of the seventeen patients who had an arthroscopy, a meniscal abnormality was found in eleven. In two of these, a healed meniscallesion was found.

Tedavi edilmeyen menisküs lezyonlarının prognozu

Öz

Menisküs lezyonu semptomlan göstererek artroskopi önerilen ve randevu verilen hastalardan randevularına gelmeyen 29 hasta tekrar muayene edilip, sorgulandılar. ikiden fazla kilitlenmesi ve ısrarla, geçmeyen şişIiği olan kişiler bu çalışmaya alınmadılar. Bu hastalardan 7 tanesi 3-6 ay içerisinde hiç şikayetlerinin kalmadığını, 6 tanesi şikayetlerinin kısmen geçtiğini söylerken, 6 tanesi şikayetlerinde hiç değişiklik olmadığını belirttiler. Bunların üç tanesi günlük aktivitelerini dahi azaltmak zorunda kaldıklarını bildirdiler. 12 hasta artroskopiyi kabul etmezken, 17 hastaya artroskopi uygulandı. 11 hastada meniskal patoloji saptandı. Bunların 2 tanesinde iyileşmiş menisküs lezyonu bulguları vardı.
