Unilateral dynamic axial fixator in femoral lengthening

Abstract

Between July 22, 1991 and August 18, 1993 the corticotomy technique of llizarov and unilateral dynamic axial fixator was used to perform 10 femoral lengthening in 10 patients (aged 12-30 years). Average gain in length was 5.2 cm per segment. All lensthening segments healed without bone grafting or internal fixation. Healing index was 34 days per centimeter gained. The device was well tolerated and easly removed in the clinical setting. There were no angular deformities or deep infections. There were just 8 minor complications including two fractures through pin track, 1 refracture of the newly formed callus and 5 minor pin track infections which subsided with oral antibiotherapy. Limb lengthening by this technique is a satisfactory procedure for the patients with moderate limb lengthening discrepancy.
