Complications of the osteosynthesis at the intertrochanteric fractures of the femur

Abstract

Fifty-one patients with trochanteric fractures treatment surgically were evaluated. The mean age was 61.44. Thirty-six of these fractures were unstable. Various types of implants were used. Dynamic Hip Screw has been the most often used implant. The average follow up period is fifteen months. Evaluation was done according to Merle D Aubigne scale. The result was excellent and good in 38 patients (%74), fair in 8 patients (%16), poor in 5 patients (%10). The most important factor for fair and poor results was technical errors probably because not having an orthopedic traction table in our clinic. In these circumstances the most often seen complication was protrusion of the screw to femoral head and neck. Secondly, reduction in varus and fixation in these position. In conclusion, in osteoporotic and unstable trochanteric fractures techniques restorating posteromedial wall must be chosen. And during trochanteric fracture surgery, traction table and C-arm image intencifications of the osteosynthesis.
