Exposure of the orthopeadic surgeon to radiation

Abstract

The fact that ionizing radiation can produce biologic damage has been known for many years. However the potantial adverse effects of exposure to low-dose radiation are not well understood. The use of ionizing radiation has been an essential part of orthopaedic surgery. The introduction of new surgical procedures such as closed, locked, intramedullary nail fixation of fractures has increased the use of floroscopic screening in the orthopaedic theatre. Ionising radiation has therefore become a serious health hazard for orthopacdic surgeons, patients and other theatre staff. On the other hand orthopaedic surgeons, in general, know very little about radiation and its effects on human health. These facts led us to review current literature about exposure of the orthopacdic surgeon to radiation and pull their attention to precautions to radiation exposure to the surgeon and to alert surgeon to the hazards of low-dose ionizing radiation.
