Clinical results of the subtrochanteric femur fractures operated with Zickel Nail

Abstract

Subtrochantenc fractures especially comminuted cases have possed a challenge to orthopacdic surgeons. 16 patients with subtrochantenc fractures of the femur (11 left femur, 5 right femur) who were admitted to the Department of Orthopacdic and Traumatology Medical Faculty of Istanbul between April 1992 and May 1994, were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with Zickel nail. Our study group consists of 10 cases who are available for last clinical control. The average follow up of the cases are 15 months (minimum 3 months, maximum 23 months), average age is 39 (ranged between 23 to 63), sex is 3 female, 7 male. 10 cases who had been presented at the final control were assessed anatomically and functionally. On conclusion, we are satisfied with the treatment of Zickel nail with regards to prevents complicahons such as implant failure, varus malunion, nonunion and prolonged bed immobilization in the treatment of subtrochanteric fracture of femur.
