Lengthening of congenital lower limb shortness with the methods of Ilizarov

Abstract

32 patients with congenital shortness of the lower extremity were treated in Baku Ortopedic and Traumatologic Scientific Research Institute between 1985-1992 utilising the Ilizarov methods. The patients were between the ages of 3-12 with a shortness of 3 to 12 cm. The shortness was in the femur in 10 patients and tibia in 22. Complications encountered in this series were equinus deformity of the foot in 2 patients, flexion deformity of the knee in 2 patients, 4 deep pin tract infection and one deformity in the regenerate following fixator removal. According to our results we think that the methods developed by Ilizarov consisting of corticotomy and circular fixator application is perfectly suitable for congenital lower limb shortness.
