Fractures of distal humerus in adults

Abstract

Fractures of the distal humerus in adults make serious disability if they are not well treated because of the complex anatomical structure of the elbow and various fracture type or when they extend into the elbow joint. Early active movement after anatomic reduction and stable internal fixation diminish functional impairment and arthrosis. 62 adult patients were treated operatively at Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department of Istanbul Medical Faculty from 1983 to 1994. Results are rated according to the criteria of Jupiter. Results are good in 74% patient with an average range of movement of 105¡ at 36 months mean follow-up. Good results can be achieved by careful preoperative planning, early stable fixation and early active movement. Also the importance of an experienced surgical team can not be ignored especially in complex intraarticular fractures.
