The results of bone marrow and coral grafts applications in bone restoration
Abstract
In order to investigate the effects of bone marrow and biocoral grafts on fracture healing 36 rabbits were studied. A unicortical defect of 1 cm in length was formed in both radius of the rabbits. Group IA was applied bone marrow, Group IB bone marrow and coral graft, Group IIB only coral graft, Group IIA constituded control group. As a consequence of radiologic assessments made in the second, fourth and sixth weeks, a more rapid new bone tissue formation was observed compared with that in the other groups. No significant difference was found in respect of new bone tissue formation between group IIA and Group IIB. In our study, we came to the conclusion that bone marrow had a positive effect on new bone tissue formation, especially during the early period of fracture healing, that coral graft had no osteogenic effect, and that the associated usage of bone marrow and coral would be helpful in the treatment of major defects.
