Ilizarov method in pseudoarthrosis of long tubular bones, treatment and clinical results

Abstract

Conventional treatment methods in pseudoarthrosis often results in shortness and sometimes nonunion. Transosseous osteosynthesis method improved by G. A. Ilizarov in 1951 presented us new aspects other than the classical view. Based on these new principles 21 patients who were treated as pseudoarthrosis in our University Hospital between November 1993 and September 1995 are examined and evaluated taking into consideration the fracture healing, treatment time, functions of the extremities, limb shortening and the results were assessed according to the current literature. In etiology, traffic accident in 18 cases, fall in 2 cases and lengthening complication in a poliomyelitis case were founded. 16 (%76.1) cases were regarded as lax and 5 (%23.9) cases as stiff pseudoarthrosis. In 3 patients who had infected defect pseudoarthrosis, segmentary bone transport method performed and the other cases were treated by compression-distraction method described by G. A. IlYzarov. The average treatment time with the apparatus was 5.5 months (2-16 months). Sufficient bone consolidation was achived in 19 (%90.4) patients. Pin tract infection as the most common complication was observed in 18 (%85.7) cases.
