The use of interlocking intramedullary nailing in the management of adult femoral shaft fractures

Abstract

Twelve fractures of the shaft of the femur were treated with the Grosse-Kempf interlocking nail in our clinic between 1993-1995. 42% of the fractures had comminution involving more than 50% of the cortex. Of the 12 nailings, 8 were static and 4 dynamic. Mean follow up time was 20.5 months (range, 9 to 26 months). Clinical and radiographic fracture union occured in 100% of cases. Radiographic consolidation was in seen all fractures at a median of 17.1 weeks (range, 12 to 28 weeks). There were no instances of deep wound infection or osteomyelitis. 2 patients had a change of limb length lesser than 2 centimeters. Angulation in any plane greater than 20 degrees was noted in one patient. Mean postoperative range of motion of the knees was 115 degrees. We have found the Grosse-Kempf method to be useful in treating patients with fractures of the shaft of the femur.
