Interscalene block anesthesia for upper extremity surgery

Abstract

59 patients who underwent interscalen block anesthesia were successfully applied various upper extremity surgery at Trakya University Medical School Department of Orthopaedic Surgery between 1991 and 1995. No serious complications were observed. Interscalen block anesthesia was used on upper extremity surgeries of the patients who unfit for general anesthesia. It provided better postsurgical comfort than general anesthesia and also, the bandages and splits were easily applied. The other advantages of interscalen block anesthesia are its sympathetic block effect which is also demanded for vessel anastomosis, and its low-cost. We consider that interscalen block anesthesia may be widely used for the upper extremity surgery because in addition to above listed benefits, orthopaedic surgeon can easily do interscalen block anesthesia by himself too.
