Complications of spinal cord injury

Abstract

Spinal cord injury and its complications cause important physical, psychosocial and economical problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the complications resulting from spinal cord injury, to show their adverse effects on the rehabilitation program, and to make related clinicians to call attention especially to preventable complications. Sixty-two spinal cord injured patients were included in the study. All the patients were evaluated regarding age, gender, etiology, time since injury, applied operations, neurologic and functional status, complications and time spent for rehabilitation program. Thirty patients had pressure ulcers at admission. The treatment of the pressure ulcers were completed within a mean of 14.65±14.51 weeks. The rehabilitation period of the patients with pressure ulcers was significantly longer than patients without ulcers (p<0.001). Heterotopic ossification and deep venous thrombosis were significantly high among patients with pressure ulcers (p=0.014, p=0.036). The incidence of the other complications were as follows: 85.5% gastro intestinal complications, 74.2% urinary infection, 38.7% pain, 37.1% spasticity, 32.3% pyleonephritis, 30.6% urinary stone, 22.6% major depression, 17.7% heterotopic ossification, 16.1% orthostatic hypotension, 11.3% deep venous thrombosis, 8.1% autonomic hyperreflaxia 4.8% hydronephrosis. Treatment and rehabilitation of a spinal cord injured patient with a multidisciplinary team approach immediately after the injury is essential not only for prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of complications but also reaching maximum functional capacity and independency of the patient.
